Approximately 7 PM. Fine evening, broken cloud.

Darren Lodwick, aged about 8 years, with his brother, Anthony, 2 years his senior, at that time were living in Pencader.

On this particular evening they had come with their parents to Tregynwr, Carmarthen, where they had previously lived, to visit Mrs Jones, 32 Haulfryn, their mother's best friend. Haulfryn is in a small housing estate on the north-facing slope of a Mount Hill lying above the south bank of the River Towy, on the south side of Carmarthen.

The boys were outside the front of Mrs Jones' house, which faces south up the hill. They were playing in the street, on the outside of an L-shaped bend, with the housing facing up the road.

They were playing football on the grass verge, with two boys who were brothers who lived a few houses along, Ricky, aged 9 and Philip, aged about 7.
