Richard Gravelle was observing the stars through his binoculars, from Baglan in Port Talbot. He observed three sets of bright lights in triangular formation travelling slowly in an easterly direction.

He assumed at the time that the lights belonged to an aircraft as some of the lights flashed on and off at regular intervals. He was struck by the absence of noise.

As the lights were going over, a shooting star travelling from the north east to south west passed immediately behind the lights.
